Music Composer
About
Mulang is a Chinese-American music composer whose work exists at the intersection of narrative tradition and sonic innovation. Specializing in orchestral and hybrid scores for visual media, he has established a reputation for creating bespoke sonic geographies that treat culture as a texture. Having lived half of his life in the cultural mosaic of China and the other half in the diverse landscape of the United States, Mulang infuses his compositions with a unique blend of influences. His music acts as a bridge between these two worlds, characterized by its unconventional nature, textural depth, unique rhythmic drive, and colorful harmonic language.
An emerging voice in the industry, Mulang has already contributed to projects recognized on the global stage. He has composed, orchestrated, and contributed additional music for films that have premiered at festivals, including the Academy Award-qualifying Pan African Film & Arts Festival, the Swedish International Film Festival, the New York Shorts International Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival. His ability to fuse elements from varied musical genres - including orchestral, rock, jazz, and electronic music - allows him to craft scores that are tactile, structural, and emotionally direct.
Beyond his work as a composer, Mulang possesses a strong background in music supervision and direction. He previously served as the Lead Music Supervisor for the documentary production company Splicer Films, and as the Music Director for the 2025 NYU Gala at the legendary Apollo Theater, where he composed and arranged for live ensembles and facilitated cross-functional team communication.
Mulang’s ability as a musical storyteller has been recognized by leading industry institutions. He was selected for the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival AMP program and was named a Composer Spotlight participant for the 2025 ASCAP Foundation Film Scoring Workshop.
When he is not in the studio sculpting sound or navigating the complexities of a score, Mulang can be found wandering through art museums seeking visual inspiration, exploring local coffee shops, or working at the pottery wheel, a practice that mirrors his belief in molding raw, chaotic elements into structured, functional art.
